There are misconceptions about Jesus Christ that deny people salvation and connection with God. Let me focus here on some wonderful truth about Jesus that might help you clear up misunderstandings.
History acknowledges the existence of a man known as Jesus of Nazareth, Jesus Christ, born in Bethlehem over 2,000 years ago, whose life and activity have had the most profound effect on people and history. Those who don’t believe Jesus is anything more than a man, can’t deny that He is worthy of the title, The Most Important Man That Ever Lived. No one else can claim the personal and social impact that Jesus achieved in just three years of public activity.
Jesus carries the title ‘Christ’, which means ‘anointed one’. This title links Jesus to fulfilment of the promise of one who would come to save us. The Jewish people were waiting for such a promised messiah and Jesus fulfilled the prophecies and proved Himself to them by the miracles He did.
Modern thought attempts to take from Jesus His unique role as the promised saviour (Messiah) by talking of a ‘Christ spirit’, such as a certain character that can descend on people. The suggestion is that Jesus was able to access some supernatural quality, but not uniquely. The suggestion is that any of us could also connect with some supernatural source and be equal to Jesus.
This idea diverts attention from putting our faith in Christ, to pursuing our own spiritual experience, independent of Christ. It even tempts our pride by suggesting we could become equal to Christ, competing with Him in significance.
The most significant thing about Jesus is not that He was human, or that He came as the Christ, but that He is God, and equal to God the Father, and was God in creation and everything that has happened in human history.
Jesus Christ is therefore absolutely unique. No other man can claim to be God. No other person with special powers can claim to be God, made human, anointed by the Holy Spirit to fulfil prophetic promises, dying for mankind’s sins, and rising from the dead to return to Heaven and be seated with God the Father.
Christianity is anchored in our relationship with that Jesus, and relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ, as presented to us in the Bible.
All ideas that Jesus was just a great man, or that He somehow had access to some special spiritual power which we can also access, denies people the chance to put their faith in Jesus, as God’s Son, Who died for them and saves them from their sins.
Those wrong ideas keep people from being forgiven of their sins, and becoming God’s child, and being filled with the Holy Spirit, and having victory over sin and authority to resist the devil, and power to build God’s Kingdom.
Those wrong ideas keep people chained to their sins and bound for eternal judgement.
Look at Bible truths showing Jesus as existing before the world began.
“Through Him all things were made, and without Him nothing was made that has been made.” John 1:3
“God’s Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.” Colossians 1:15,16
“He was in the world and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognise Him.” John 1:10
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms. According as he has chosen us in Christ before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love” Ephesians 1:3,4
The Bible describes Jesus as being eternal, the same in the past as He will be in the future.
“Jesus Christ, the same yesterday and today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8
No other man can make these claims. And no person hoping to find the ‘Christ spirit’ will ever be able to make these claims. Jesus is unique, as the Son of God Who took part in creation, and as the saviour chosen to pay for our sins even before we were created.
The idea that Jesus was just human stops people putting their faith in Christ as their saviour. And the idea that Jesus was a man who tapped into some special spiritual source denies that Jesus is God and has uniquely provided us eternal salvation.
The most important way you can relate to Jesus is to put your faith in Him. Respecting Him is nice. Learning His teachings is wise. But life transformation comes from putting our faith in Jesus Christ as our saviour and Lord.
I refer to Jesus as the Eternal Jesus, to remind us Jesus was not just a man who lived for 33 years some 2,000 years ago. And Jesus is not one of us who caught some special spiritual privilege. Jesus is God, the eternal God. Jesus existed before creation and rules as King of Kings and Lord of Lords for all eternity to come.
“Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, ruler of the kings of the earth.” Revelation 1:5
“On his robe and his thigh he has this name written: King of kings and Lord of lords.” Revelation 19:16
Friends I urge you to put your faith in Christ and keep in mind that Jesus is God, so He can save you and keep you through your whole life. May you be blessed as you enjoy your relationship with The Eternal Jesus.
