There are people who appear to be ‘spiritual’ but who are not. There is even a natural ability, called Spiritual Intuition, which we can all tap into to some degree. It may seem like ‘spirituality’ because of the apparent sensitivity to spiritual phenomena. But it is not a sign of quality in the spirit, but of slavery in the body.
Spiritual Intuition is a Part of our Body
Dr Harold Dewberry is an Australian minister who has been recognised internationally for his insights into demonic activity, deliverance ministry and rebuilding of people’s inner life. As a young man, I sat under his instruction when he was running the Teen Challenge ministry in Sydney’s red-light Kings Cross district.
Harold taught me over 35 years ago that Spiritual Intuition is a quality of the bodily senses. Appetite, sexual drive and physical senses are part of the human bodily capacity. Bodily appetites and drives can be healthy in their place but they become destructive when they have become addictions and distortions. So too our spiritual intuition is the body’s capacity to alert us to spiritual phenomena, but can become a destructive weakness in our life if distorted.
What Is Spiritual Intuition?
The right and healthy function for spiritual intuition is seen when we get goose-bumps or other physical responses as a warning around spiritual situations. Physical experiences which are prompted by situations which have a spiritual quality are meant to alert us to spiritual danger.
The sense that you are in the wrong place and in some danger is what we might call a sixth sense. Some people are more aware of it than others, but most people know what I am talking about. It is an in-built protection mechanism.
Distorted Spiritual Intuition
When spiritual intuition has been damaged or distorted in our life it may cause us to be magnetically drawn toward things that are of a wrong spirit. People develop a morbid fascination for weird and off-beat spiritual phenomena when their spiritual intuition is distorted.
It may also cause a person to experience what seem like spiritual experiences, such as déjà vu or premonitions. (Déjà vu is the experience of feeling like you have been to a place before, when it is genuinely new to you.)
Another sign that the spiritual intuition has been distorted is when people become fascinated with occult, weird or disturbing things. One lady helped by my wife and I was addicted to horror movies. She knew she should not watch them and that she would be highly disturbed if she did, but she could not keep herself away. This indicated that her spiritual intuition capacity had been distorted in some way.
A further distortion of spiritual intuition is when people seek after such psychic and occult practices as spirit guides, astral travel, séances and psychic powers. All of what we know as occult, new age and psychic practices are built on the bodily capacity for spiritual intuition.
Spiritual Intuition is not Spiritual
The lie behind spiritual intuition is the suggestion that it is a spiritual quality. Some people mistakenly think that those with psychic abilities are somehow ‘spiritual’ and may be somehow naturally close to God. This is absolutely not the case. The part of their being which has connected with demonic spiritual forces is not their spirit, but their body.
Truly spiritual people have been born again in their spirit, through faith in Jesus Christ. This is when they come alive in their spirit as a child of God. That is what Jesus was talking about when He said “You must be born again”.
“Jesus answered and said to him, Truly, truly, I say to you, Unless a man is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus said to him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Truly, truly, I say to you, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said to you, You must be born again.” John 3:3-7
Dead In Spirit
If a person has not be ‘born again’ they cannot be a truly spiritual person. Those who engage in New Age, occult and psychic practices are fleshly people who are not given spiritual life by those practices. They seek those powers in order to suit their human desires and personal needs. There is nothing truly spiritual about the practitioners at all.
Actually, what is ‘spiritual’ about those people is that they have come under the power of an evil spirit. They end up being dominated and controlled by demons who destroy their natural human existence and keep them from true spiritual life which comes by faith in Jesus.
Get Real About Spiritual Intuition
Spiritual Intuition is no big deal. It’s like hunger and thirst. It’s just a boring part of our human bodily functions. Most meals and drinks are ‘forgettable’ and most senses we have through our ‘sixth sense’ Spiritual Intuition are equally as unimportant.
True spirituality comes from being in loving family relationship with the God of the universe, our creator, Almighty God, through faith in His son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. That spiritual experience not only brings our spirit to life within us, but nourishes our spiritual existence by God’s Holy Spirit at work within us. Our flesh life fades away, pale compared to the wonder of eternity and divinity at work in our mortality.
Don’t accept counterfeit spirituality. The New Age movement cannot offer you life. It offers you delusive experiences that take from you, rather than giving to you. The same is true for the occult and psychic processes.
Get Real. Get ‘Born Again’. Become a Son of the Living God. Allow Eternity to flow through your mortal body. Come Alive. Conquer the demons that others are being possessed by.
When your spirit is alive and connected with the Living God and you are filled with the Holy Spirit of God you will realise that Spiritual Intuition is as meaningless as a glass of water. You will be drinking the wine of the Spirit and operating in a dimension far beyond what your body can ever know.
