A friend told me recently how his successful clothing business died slowly over a five year period. During that time he grew wonderfully in his walk with God and found himself quite insular from the worsening business situation. He said that some of his friends thought something was wrong with him because he wasn’t anxious or fearful, but was happy and unbothered.
I used the term ‘Divine Disconnect’ to describe that lovely place he was in. There is a wonderful place of peace we can all enjoy where we are disconnected from things that would make others anxious, fearful or otherwise reactive. It is a place were we are untouched by things that would normally stress people.
The business failure led to much better things, so the temporary negative was not a real negative in the long term.
The Apostle Paul described himself in that divine disconnect when he talked about his own death.
“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet I don’t know what to choose. For I am caught between two choices, desiring to depart and be with Christ; which is far better: Nevertheless to stay alive is more needful for you.” Philippians 1:21-24
Instead of being afraid of death Paul looked forward to being with Christ. He had a divine disconnect from something that terrifies millions of people. He was untouched by the usual anxiety about death. Some might have thought him mad for thinking the way he did.
Paul also had divine disconnect about material goods, happy to have nothing and able to enjoy having an abundance.
“I have learned to be content in all situations. I know both how to be without and how to abound: everywhere and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
Philippians 4:11-13
What a wonderful place to be in, where you are untouched by things that normally upset people. Life would be so much sweeter for everyone if they could constantly enjoy that divine disconnect.
Note that this disconnect is not numbness, such as some spiritual approaches might recommend. We don’t become numb, and we can enjoy all of life with all its joys and sensitivities. Yet things that would disturb most people simply don’t get to us.
The same thing happens when we have a burden about something and we give that burden to God, as we are instructed to do.
“Cast all your cares on God because he cares for you.” 1Peter 5:7
What has weighed us down for a long time can suddenly become a non-issue, once we hand it over to God. We can have peace that doesn’t make sense, in the middle of a lot of turmoil, untouched by circumstances, because our confidence is in God.
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and God’s peace, which surpasses all understanding, will protect your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6,7
Are you troubled by circumstances, fears, challenges or issues? You can be set free from anxiety and stress, even if the circumstances don’t change. There is a Divine Disconnect available to you, where you are Untouched by things that otherwise bring you down.
Take you issues and problems and tell God all about them. Pass those concerns to God and let Him be in control of how they work out. Let Him have the problem and let Him create the solution and the outcome. Then trust Him to be in control and in charge. Repent of fear and anxiety and tell those things to get out of your heart and mind. When troubled, keep handing the concerns over to God.
And let God’s peace take control of your life as you enjoy Divine Disconnect from the worries of life.
