Life is not without dangers. If we are not careful we can become fearful about those dangers. Fear locks people up, and in extreme cases, keeps them hiding from life.
How do we live with any assurance of safety when there are so many evils and so much can go wrong? Our assurance comes from the Lord.
So, let’s consider the two main kinds of evil that are a threat to you. There is the evil of external things hurting you, such as a car accident, sickness, violent attack, being wrongly accused, and so on. These things come at you from the world around you and attack your body or mind.
The other kind of evil is one that springs up within you. This could be anger, greed, jealousy, pride, rebellion, prejudice, self-righteousness and all manner of evils that come from our heart. Jesus warns that our heart is a breeding ground for all kinds of evil.
“Out of the heart comes evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.” Matthew 15:19
We need God to protect us from evil things that attack us from the world around us. These are the things talked about in Psalm 91, where we are promised protection from such dangers.
“He will surely deliver you from the hunter’s trap and from the perilous pestilence.” Psalm 91:3
“You will not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day, Nor the pestilence that walks in darkness, Nor the destruction that lays waste at noon.” Psalm 91:5,6
God is described as our shield and strong tower. He is our place of protection from all those enemies that could attack us from the outside.
“He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.” Psalm 91:2
“The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer. My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” Psalm 18:2
“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” Proverbs 18:10
So we find our sense of security in troubled times and in face of the many dangers, by relying on the Lord to be our shield and defender and the strong castle we can hide in. We know that God’s angels are there to protect us.
“The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him, And delivers them.” Psalm 34:7
“He will give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways.” Psalm 91:11
So when you are in a situation that makes you afraid, maybe because it is new to you and you feel insecure, or maybe because there are dangerous people and dangerous circumstances to navigate, put your trust in the Lord. Cry out to Him, asking Him to keep and protect you.
I recall hearing testimony many years ago of a young drug addict being led to faith in Christ. The young man lived in a cheap room at the top of a flight of stairs. Each night the drug dealer called on him to sell drugs and demand money. The one who led the young man to faith prayed that God would set an angel to guard the door that night.
The next morning the young man woke, from undisturbed sleep. At the bottom of the stairs the drug dealer asked “Who was that man guarding your door all night?” It turned out the drug dealer tried to get to the door several times and was met by a huge man who threw him down the stairs repeatedly. There was a very tangible angelic protection that night.
My parents arrived at a holiday place in the dark and were about to pull into a caravan park. A car pulled up beside them and a man called, “Not here. Follow me.” They followed the man for quite some distance until they arrived at a different caravan park and pulled their caravan in there. The man waved and drove off.
Next morning, after a night of torrential rain, all caravans in the park they planned to stay at were swept around and damaged by flood waters and there were scary evacuations late at night. They were high, dry and safe. My parents guess an angel protected them from danger they didn’t know was coming.
So I encourage you to put your trust in the Lord and look to the many ways He can keep and protect you from dangers you may not even know about.
And I love a verse that speaks of God protecting us from evil things that might even spring up from inside us.
“Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, now and forever. Amen.” Jude 1:24,25
That promise is also found in Paul’s writing to the church at Corinth.
“He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1Corinthians 1:8
Friends, God loves you and God can and will protect you from evil. Cry out to Him and put your trust in Him, in all your situations, to keep you safe from outside dangers and evils emerging within you. Make it your regular prayer to come before God and pray Protect Me Lord.
